What is the Circle of Security™?
The Circle of Security™ is an internationally renowned parenting program developed in the United States. It is an evidence-based program that draws extensively upon The Attachment Theory and current affective neuroscience. It helps parents develop the skills to nurture securely attached children. These skills include:
- Observational skills of children’s developmental needs
- The ability to reflect and create positive dialogue
- Empathy
- Co-regulation of children’s emotions
Why secure attachment?
Research has shown that having a secure attachment is important for your child’s emotional, intellectual and social development. A secure parent-child relationship:
- Promotes the child’s curiosity and exploration of the environment
- Provides a conducive learning environment for the child and predicts future academic achievements
- Promotes children’s positive social behaviour, empathy and reduces aggression
- Encourages children to develop creativity and persistence in coping with challenges
Additionally, the advantages of a secure parent-child relationship will continue to be felt throughout your child’s life as it strengthens their ability to nurture a strong and supportive social network with people around them. Emotionally secure adults are more likely to form a stable and positive romantic relationship.
