Why Cant I Lose Weight? Discover the Secrets to Weight Loss Success and How to Get in Shape for the Summer! With Norwich Weight Loss Expert and Nutritional Therapist Catherine Jeans DipION mBANT CNHC

Why cant i lose weight by Norwich weight loss expert Catherine JeansWelcome to my blog… why cant I lose weight?  This is Norwich weight loss expert and Nutritional Therapist Catherine Jeans

“Why cant I lose weight?” is something I hear time and time again from my clients.   Perhaps like them, you’ve tried every diet under the sun, yet no matter what you do the weight just won’t shift, despite barely eating anything and spending hours sweating at the gym.  The problem is calorie restriction and most aerobic exercise just doesn’t promote weight loss in the majority of people.  We’ve had over 40 years of “low fat diet” campaigns and more recently “eat less and move more”… the fact is as a nation we are not losing weight but putting it on!  Over 60% of the UK are now overweight or obese.
In this blog, I’m going to give you 5 research based secrets to weight loss, which are proving very successful in my new weight loss group.  Very often I see clients who want more regular support and have asked me to start a weight loss support group.  I’ve already began my first group, and after two months they are seeing great success with many pounds and inches lost so far.  Due to popular demand, I’m starting  a new weight loss group on Thursday 20th June at 5:15pm – 6:45pm, with follow up groups the third Thursday of every month.  There are just 7 places left – to book please contact reception today.  To find out more about the weight loss group, please click here

Why Can’t I Lose Weight?  5 Secrets for Getting in Shape this Summer

  1. Include protein with every meal: protein is broken down much more slowly than carbohydrates, and helps to keep your blood sugar levels balanced.  This is vital to prevent blood sugar dips throughout the day, which can leave you craving all the wrong foods.  Protein also has a thermogenic effect in the body, helping to stoke your metabolism.  Include a portion of lean protein with every meal and snack: this includes turkey breast, chicken breast, eggs, cottage cheese, fish, seafood, low fat cream cheese, beans and pulses.
  2. Eat consciously!  You may be eating huge portions of food without even realising it, especially if you drink alcohol with your meals.  If you eat unconsiously, it’s not wonder you’re left wondering “why cant I lose weight?” Put a large sign up near where you eat that says, “eat mindfully” and focus on what is on your plate and how much you are eating.  Avoid eating in front of the TV and aim to chew every mouthful at least 20 times.  Also put your knife and fork down at least three times during a meal.  That way you’re more likely to listen to your fullness signals and recognise when you’ve had enough.
  3. Avoid refined carbs and sugar: foods that contain high amounts of sugar or refined carbs such as white bread, white pasta, white rice, cakes, biscuits and sweets are broken down by your body extremely quickly.  Sugar surges into the bloodstream which causes a peak in your blood sugar levels.  When blood sugar levels rise too quickly the body overcompensates by producing too much insulin.  This hormone promotes fat storage (not great for weight loss!) and when too much is released, you’re likely to end up with low blood sugar, making you more likely to crave the wrong foods to compensate.  Also be aware of sugary fruits such as bananas, grapes and dried fruit.  Replace fast-releasing foods with wholegrains, beans, vegetables and less sugary fruits such as pears, apples, citrus and berries.
  4. Fill up on non-starchy vegetables and salad:  aim to fill 50% of your plate with non-starchy veg and salad, such as broccoli, green beans, kale, spinach, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and radish.  If you don’t usually eat many vegetables, increase them slowly so that your bowels don’t over react.
  5. Do the right kind of exercise:  we are now recognising that doing the right kind of exercise is vital for fat loss.  Too many of us exercise in the “moderate intensity” band, whereas for weight loss success you either need to do short intervals of high intensity exercise or longer intervals of lower intensity fat burning exercise.  Combined with this, weights and muscle resistance help to increase muscle mass, which keeps you burning calories for longer.

Womens Health Week Tips: Is your oversized fashionable handbag worth the pain? By Norwich Chiropractor Kirsti Goodfellow

Women health tips by Norwich Chiropractor at The Orange Grove ClinicTo celebrate Womens Health Week, Norwich chiropractor Kirsti Goodfellow asks: Is your oversized fashionable handbag worth the pain?  Kirsti wants women to understand the risks to their health posed by big shoulder bags, one of the most popular fashion accessories of the past few years.

Why are oversized handbags a danger to womens health?

Oversized bags may be popular, but they can be a great source of pain as you tend to pack more in them. The straps, especially thin or chained ones can dig into your shoulders, interfering with circulation and causing tingling, numbness, and weakness in your arms and hands. Wearing a bag on your shoulder regularly or for long periods of time can lead to poor posture, as the body tries to compensate for the extra weight by leaning to one side.

In addition to affecting your posture, bags that weigh more than 10 percent of your body weight can cause improper balance by interfering with your natural movement, thereby making you walk lopsided and increasing your risk of falling

Norwich chiropractor Kirsti Goodfellow warns that back pain, sore shoulders and stiff necks can all be symptoms of your shoulder bag. These symptoms can also lead to headaches and migraines, and may even mechanically impair your movements.

How can women protect their back health and enjoy oversized handbag fashion?

Here are some tips to protect your back from heavy handbags:

  • Don’t carry your bag on the same shoulder all the time.  Change the bag to the other shoulder frequently when walking.
  • Clean out any excess “stuff” from your handbag. Less weight in your bag equals less pain for you.
  • Choose a bag with a long, wide strap. That way, you can put the strap over your head and wear the bag across your body, messenger style.  This can distribute the weight of the bag more evenly.
  • Focus on your posture. Walk upright and don’t slouch-this will help keep your body balanced, despite carrying a heavy load.

When choosing the latest fashion trends to follow, women don’t forget to take your spine health into consideration too!  Why not book in with our Norwich chiropractor Kirsti Goodfellow today for a back and posture check and more advice on how to protect your back health.  Call us today on 01603 631900 or go to our contact page.

How to put a Healthy Spring in Your Step with Norwich Shiatsu therapist Gary Moore

Norwich Shiatsu therapist on how to boost your health this springOur Norwich Shiatsu therapist Gary Moore is back for his seasonal blog post… with plenty of top tips on how to put a healthy spring in your step!

Embrace the Spring and Maximise your Health

Welcome to the latest of my quarterly seasonal blogs, presenting the seasons from a Shiatsu perspective, with easy ways you can embrace the seasons to support better health and wellbeing.  Hopefully many of you will have read my Winter article, enabling you to get through the cold weather with enough energy remainding in your batteries to spring forward with zest as the sun warms our bodies and everything around us.  For those of you who don’t feel fully in tune with the season change yet, why not try a Shiatsu session to give you that much needed boost and get you back on track?

Top Tips on Putting a Healthy Spring in Your Step

Spring is a time for new growth, regeneration and cleansing.  It is the time of the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians (the so-called wood meridians).  There is no greater time for a de-tox, eating fresh, new green vegetables to support your body’s natural ability to cleanse and rebalance.  Green is also the colour associated with the liver and gall bladder meridians.

The liver meridian has links with muscles and the reproductive system and is said to control the tendons in the body - storing the blood as we rest and then supplying it to the tendons as we become active.  Try to incorporate some gentle stretches into your day (the makko-ho yoga stretches relate directly to the meridians- I can show you these in an individual session if you wish

As seeds sprout and the sun’s warmth promotes new growth, this is a great time for enhancing the liver meridian energy flow with outdoor activities. These “Wood” meridians have a direct relationship with the flow of energy (Ki) and blood throughout the body and so disharmony here will potentially result in symptoms such as physical stiffness, frustration, anger, migraines, IBS and depression.  Such stagnation as we term it in the Shiatsu world, can be relieved with Shiatsu itself but also regular Tai chi/Chi kung classes can be extremely beneficial.

The liver meridian also opens into the eyes so be gentle with your eyes this Spring – don’t spend too long at the computer keyboard and consider using eye-baths.

The Liver and Gall Bladder meridians both relate to decision–making so if you are going round and round in ever decreasing circles over an issue it could be time for rebalance and support for these wood meridians.

A Taste Of Spring

The taste associated with Liver and Gall Bladder meridians is sour .  Therefore including sour tasting foods into your diet may help to improve meridian function.  This does not mean you should overdose on sour foods- just small changes are best.  For example, squeeze a lemon over salads or into your glass of filtered water.

If you would like to book a Shiatsu session to help balance your liver and gallbladder meridians and put a healthier spring in your step, then contact us today.

Tai Chi and Chi Kung Classes with a difference at The OGC

Next beginners course starting Friday 26th April, 6.00pm-7.00pm.

Here at The Orange Grove Clinic our Tai Chi and Chi Kung classes are taught by someone who works with energetic pathways/meridians everyday in his Shiatsu Practice.

Gary Moore MRSS teaches Yang style Tai Chi, which combines traditional moves with flowing movements and which he believes is the most suitable for beginners.  The classes are taught very much from a therapists standpoint, with the aim being to improve everyone’s health, whilst remaining true to the authentic styles (and having plenty of fun at the same time!).

As the course progresses, the Chi Kung exercises are tailored towards each individual, so that each person can put emphasis on working in areas that are particularly beneficial to them, whilst the Tai Chi builds up from scratch to a routine that can be practised at home after the course comes to an end.

These classes are limited to 7 people per class, running for 10 weeks for just £70.

If you fancy improving your flexibility, balance, posture, muscle tone, breathing and grounding why not give Tai Chi and Chi Kung at The OGC a try.  For more information and to register your interest please call reception on 01603 631900. Or you can go to our contact page.

Gardening One of the Major Causes of Back Pain: How To Take Care of Your Back by Norwich Chiropractor Kirsti Goodfellow

Major causes of back pain by Norwich chiropractor Kirsti GoodfellowIt’s Chiropractic Awareness Week as well as National Gardening Week… so did you know that gardening is one of the major causes of back pain, primarily due to poor posture?  It’s so common to see people bending over like this to garden and not taking care of their back whilst doing essential maintenance in the garden that tends to fall this time of year.  Our Norwich Chiropractor Kirsti Goodfellow has a wealth of advice to support better back care as you get into the garden this spring.

How to protect yourself against one of the major causes of back pain this time of year

During National Gardening Week 15th – 21st April 2013, thousands of people across the country will be coming together to help keep Britain beautiful by sharing and celebrating everything about gardens and gardening.  Here are a few hints and tips that will help you enjoy the fruits of your labour for many years to come!  Gardening isn’t exactly an extreme sport, but whilst you might not need a helmet to participate, you can take steps to avoid injury from maintaining improper posture, one of the principal causes of back pain.

Bending over seeding, weeding and watering, the hours can quickly slip by.  Then there are activities like digging, carrying buckets, pushing wheelbarrows and lifting.  Done the wrong way, these activities can place strain and stress on our backs, particularly when our bodies are held in unsound positions over a sustained period of time.

It is easy to understand how back pain can arise from our pursuits in the garden if we don’t undertake these activities in the right way.  And not surprising that in general, about 80% of people experience low back pain at some stage in their lives. [1]  But often we don’t fully understand what could be the causes of our back pain?

The good news is most injuries are preventable.  Here are some tried and tested rules for lifting with care, without hurting your back:

  • Get Close to the Load
  • Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, head up, feet and body pointing in the same direction.
  • Pivot with your feet, don’t twist your body whilst carrying the load.
  • Knees Bent, Back Straight: Check the weight of what you are lifting. Use your leg and arm muscles to smoothly and slowly lift.
  • Easy Does It: Bend your knees and slowly lower the load to its intended place.
  • Do not lift heavy objects above your waist.
  • Avoid heavy lifting immediately after prolonged bending and kneeling.

Aside from using the correct posture and tools, take frequent breaks and walk around and stretch, as staying in the same position for too long can be one of the causes of a sore back and pain later that night or the next morning. Back or muscle pain that last longer than 48 hours is your body’s way of saying it needs help.

Chiropractors are trained to detect and treat spinal problems.  They provide expert care for your back, muscles and joints, helping you to enjoy life to the fullest and addressing what may be the underlying causes of your back pain.  Our chiropractor Kirsti Goodfellow has over a decade experience as a chiropractor and can help support you to better back health and towards a back free from pain.  To book an appointment with Kirsti for a posture assessment or chiropractic treatment, please call our Norwich reception on 01603 631900 or you can go to our contact page  To welcome you to our Norwich clinic for Chiropractic care, Kirsti is offering a promotional discount for new clients until 30th April 2013.  Initial Consultation and Report of Findings:  Adult £30 / Child £20

New Trauma Clinic with Norwich Shiatsu Practitioner Gary Moore

Gary Moore Norwich trauma clinic offering Shiatsu therapyA new Norwich trauma clinic will be opening from the Orange Grove on Monday 8th April, ran by Shiatsu practitioner Gary Moore MRSS.  The trauma clinic is designed to provide extra assistance for people in their recovery from traumatic injuries and events.  Gary Moore has been working as a Shiatsu practitioner for over 12 years and first became involved in this type of work after a serious neck injury resulted in him giving up his previous career in finance.  Having tried all the treatments available under the NHS at the time and having paid for a variety of private treatments, he finally found the Japanese art of Shiatsu, which eventually restored him to full health.

The trauma clinic will be held every Monday, starting on Monday 8th April at 10:30am.  To book an appointment within the clinic, where you will be attended to by Gary on a one to one basis, please call our clinic on 01603 631900.  Or you can go to our contact page.

More about The Norwich Trauma Clinic

Gary Moore, our experienced Shiatsu Practitioner, decided to open this trauma clinic in Norwich following his own first hand experience of how Shiatsu can be very supportive during trauma or traumatic events.  He suffered from a serious neck injury which resulted in him having to give up his previous career in finance.

As Gary explains:  ”I can remember at the time of the injury and whilst I was making little progress in my recovery, that I felt so vulnerable.  Previously, I had always been very fit and sporty and suddenly I was desperately looking for something to help me regain good health.  I feel very fortunate to have eventually found Shiatsu.  The beauty of Shiatsu is that it is gentle to receive and works with the body, to encourage the whole system to recover.  In my experience it is one of the most powerful means out there to help achieve long- lasting recovery. Having experienced this trauma first-hand, I seem to have a natural affinity with this type of injury, which seems to be of great help when working with clients.”

“Obviously what we do as Shiatsu practitioners in the UK is very much complementary to the mainstream work available under the NHS.  But for those people who have been through the system without success or even those who have experienced limited recovery but still don’t “feel themselves” and can’t put their finger on the reason why, I would urge them to give Shiatsu a try.  My experience shows there can be light at the end of the tunnel and I feel sure that in years to come Shiatsu will play an increased role in people’s recovery in the UK, as indeed it already does in some other countries in the world.

Gary Moore’s Trauma Clinic will be on Monday mornings at 11am at The Orange Grove Clinic, next to the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich City Centre, starting on the 8th April. Each clinic will be open to one client, who will receive a Shiatsu treatment with the emphasis on trauma support.  For more  information , please call the clinic on 01603 631900 or go to our contact page.

What is Hypnobirthing? By Experienced Norwich Official Hypnobirthing Practitioner Jackie Heffer-Cooke

What is hypnobirthing by Norwich official hypnobirthing practitioner Jackie Heffer-CookeWhat is Hypnobirthing?  Norwich Official Hypnobirthing Practitioner Jackie Heffer-Cooke has all the answers.  Jackie is one of the region’s most experienced hypnobirthing practitioners, and she trained with the official Hypnobirthing Institute.  She has helped hundreds of couples to a better birthing experience, and in this informative blog post she tells you all about hypnobirthing and what it could do for you.  A must read for anyone considering or about to start a family.

What is Hypnobirthing?

HypnoBirthing is all about Endorphin flow. Endorphins are the body’s natural ‘tranquilizer’ and they flow when the body is in a state of calm.  HypnoBirthing is all about keeping the body in a state of calm and control during birthing so that the Endorphins can help the body give birth naturally by tapping into this natural painkiller.

How do I keep myself in a state of calm and control during birthing?

The HypnoBirthing course I teach from my Norwich base, The Orange Grove Clinic, shows you how to use all kinds of self-hypnosis, deep relaxation and specific breathing techniques to help keep your body, and your mind, free from any unnecessary stress and tension.  It also explains in detail exactly what your body is going through in labour, so that nothing comes as a ‘shock’ therefore ensuring that birthing mum, and dad, remain able to stay in control and free from fear and anxiety.

When birthing mums are fearful during birth the stress response system kicks in, and this releases Catecholamines, the ‘fight or flight’ hormone, which shuts off the Endorphin supply.  This starts a chain of events in our body which, amongst other things, leads to our heart-rate quickening, blood pressure rising, blood being pumped to skeletal muscles and away from those Uterine birthing muscles which now struggle and tire more easily.  In addition to all of this HypnoBirthing really encourages you to enjoy your pregnancy and welcome the amazing experience that is child-birth!

Massage Techniques to Support Labour

I am also a specialist in pregnancy massage, and during my classes I teach my couples how to use simple massage techniques to support the birthing process.  In fact, any kind of massage that feels good is great during labour!  But there are some specific techniques your birth partner can employ.

There is a really powerful technique called Light Touch Massage, which is a very light touch administered over the skin around the neck, spine and upper arms particularly, in sweeps of figures of 8, or big V shapes.  Kinaesthetically covering an area of the body overwhelms the nerves, the sensory system, stimulating the brain stem and cortex in a disproportionate measure.   This sends electrical activities via the brain stem and cerebral hemispheres to say – I FEEL GOOD.  This is a Homeopathic, drug free, natural method of releasing those Feel Good Endorphins.  It’s a ‘natural tens machine’, if you like. A t the other end of the scale a really good ‘meaty’ massage around the sacrum area is great during labour.  In massage it’s important to never massage directly onto the spine, so ask your birth partner to work either side of the lower spine and into that lower back area.

It’s a really good idea to practice this first (it feels great in late pregnancy also!) as everybody’s comfort levels in massage depth are different.  It’s important to establish how deep you like massage before you get to the big day.  Ask your partner to use the inside balls of their hands to apply pressure, or they can even use the flat of their fists, slowly rotating in small circles.  Note to dads and birth partners… make sure that you are comfortable too – once you’ve started and birthing mum realises how much she likes massage – you may be there for some time….

What is Perineal massage?

Perineal massage improves the health, blood flow, elasticity and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles.  To be really effective, it should be practised 6 to 8 weeks before your EDD, every day, for around 5 minutes. Massaging with oil (non perfumed of course) helps the perineal tissues to soften and thereby gently unfold when needed.  As you or your partner do the massage, you can teach these muscles to relax and open outward in response to pressure.

Dip your thumb into the oil to the second knuckle and insert into the vagina approx 2 inches, pressing downward on the area between the vagina and the rectum.  Rub the oil into the inner edge of the perineum and the lower vaginal wall.  Maintaining a steady pressure, slide the thumb to and fro in a U sling-type motion. The pressure will stretch the vaginal tissue, the muscles surrounding the vagina and the outer rim of the perineum. Be sure to stretch the inner, as well as the outer.  Each time you do this you feel the tissue relax more and more. Some of my mums have sworn this massage was the reason they didn’t tear whilst birthing, in some cases, some very big babies!
