What is aromatherapy and essential oils?
Aromatherapy dates back to Ancient Egypt, where plants and flowers were distilled to provide essential oils. This tradition has been used worldwide, including during the second world war where French doctors applied essential oils to treat soldiers’ wounds.
These same essential oils are now used as part of an aromatherapy massage, enhancing the health boosting properties of massage with the therapeutic benefit of the oils used. Each essential oil comes from either plants, roots, flowers, leaves or bark, and can contain up to one hundred different chemical components which can have a strong effect on the entire being.
The reason essential oils can have such an impact on your health and well being is due to their smell. As humans we can distinguish up to 10,000 different smells, which enter the body via the fine hairs that line the nose, stimulating the limbic system in the brain that controls our moods, emotions, memory and learning. Each essential oil has a different stimulating effect on the brain, such as lavender, which can increase relaxation due to the effect on alpha waves in the back of the head, or jasmine which raises beta waves producing the sensation of alertness.
