Pregnancy Multi Vitamins and MineralsNutrition for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding The OGC

If you are thinking about starting a family, it is advisable to begin a pregnancy supplement about 3 months before you start trying.  This is just to ensure you give your body an optimal intake of nutrients to prepare for pregnancy.  Don’t worry if you’re already pregnant, it’s never too late to start supporting your nutrient status, and our nutritional therapist recommends a range of supplements for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Nutri’s Pregnancy Multi Essentials One Per Day is the pregnancy vitamin and mineral of choice for our Nutritional Therapist Catherine Jeans.  This gold standard multi contains all the essential nutrients you and your growing baby needs, in forms that are easy for your body to absorb.  As Catherine explains:  “that’s the difference between this product and say, one you might buy from a supermarket.  It has optimal levels of key nutrients, rather than just levels to prevent deficiency diseases.  And also these come in forms that are more absorbable for your body, rather than the cheapest form.”

This product includes the Department of Health recommended levels of Vitamin D and folic acid, as well as a full 25mg of Zinc, vital for healthy cell dividion, foetal development and for helping to reduce the risk of post-natal depression.  It also contains 18mg of easily absorbed iron and higher levels of minerals such as magnesium, calcium, iodine and selenium.  This all comes in just one tablet per day.  This product is ideal pre-natally, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, to ensure optimal nutrient intake at these important times.  Click here to find out more or to purchase Nutri Pregnancy Multi Essentials One Per day.

Essential Fats for Brain DevelopmentPregnancy supplements The OGC

Ongoing research shows us that omega 3 essential fats, particularly DHA, are vital for the complete development of the human brain during pregnancy and the first years of life.  In fact, a mother’s breast milk is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which help to support this ongoing development.  If a mother’s diet is not rich enough in omega 3 fatty acids (and actually most of us do not eat enough omega 3 fats from oily fish and certain seeds), then the mother and baby can become deficient in omega 3 fats.

Our nutritional therapist recommends the Eskimo 3 range of omega 3 fish oil supplements, which provide optimum levels of omega 3 fats, alongside a guarantee of freshness, free from toxins and sustainably sourced .  These are available as oils or capsules, either at the clinic or online.  At the clinic, we also stock the vegetarian essential fat complex Omega 3:6:9 by Solgar.

Vitamin D Supplements for Pregnancy and Babies

Our range of Vitamin D supplements provide an easy and convenient way to top up your Vitamin D levels, using the more absorbable form of Vitamin D3.   Produced by Nutri, you can choose from Vitamin D3 drops (1000iu per drop), chewable Vitamin D3 500, or chewable Vitamin D3 2000.   We recommend that most women should take 1000iu of Vitamin D3 during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  To find out more about Vitamin D supplements for babies, please click here.

Probiotics During PregnancyBeneficial bacteria probiotics The OGC

If you have any digestive problems, or you or anyone in your family suffers with allergies, then you may wish to consider supplemeting a probiotic during pregnancy.  Research by the College of Medicine at Swansea University has shown that certain probiotics may help to reduce the risk of a baby developing allergies and atopic eczema by up to 50%. In most cases, we recommend the Bio-Kult range of probiotics, which provides a broad spectrum of 14 different strains of probiotics to support a healthy bacterial balance in the gut.

We also stock GiSol, which provides a yeast organism called Saccharomyces Boulardii, which research has been shown to increase production of Secretory IgA.  This immunoglobulin is found in breast milk, and is vital for supporting a baby’s immune protection.

Alternatively you may wish to supplement probiotics during pregnancy with our food state supplements.  Organic Prime Directive and Organic Gluten free Prime Selection are rich in superfoods and probiotics, providing a powerhouse of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fats, enzymes and anti-oxidants.  Made from ingredients such as spirulina, oats, barley, flaxseed, almonds and brown rice (deoending on whether you choose the product with or without gluten), just one teaspoon per day provides good levels of both probiotics and essential vitamins and minerals.

Supplements to Support Gut Movement and Relief from Constipation

Many women find that their bowel movement can become a little sluggish during pregnancy, due to the pressure placed on your digestive system by your growing baby, and due to the alterations that can occur in digestive secretions.  If you are chronically constipated, then it’s advisable to see your GP or midwife.  There are also certain supplements which are safe to take during pregnancy to support bowel movement.

These include Lepicol, which is a psyllium, inulin and probiotic powder which is mixed into water.  Our nutritional therapist recommends one tablespoon in water before bed, alongside an extra glass of water.  This can be increased to twice per day if needed.  You can also try other things such as psyllium husk fibre and flaxseed powder, which we stock at the clinic Baby Centre.

There may also be alterations to your diet which may help to support your gut movement – book an appointment with our nutritional therapist to discuss changes you can make to your diet.

Herbal Teas During Pregnancy

Teas are a great way to use herbs with safety during pregnancy, due to their small doses.  Our medical herbalist Alex Hobbs has a fabulous range of teas, including her pregnancy nourish tea, which is available to buy in our Baby centre shop at the clinic.  To find out more about herbalism during pregnancy, please click here.

We also offer raspberry leaf tea and raspberry leaf extract, which are known to help support the condition of the uterus and may even help support a healthy delivery and reduced risk of complication.  This is recommended during the last trimester, taking between two and five cups per day of tea.
