Top tips on weaning from Norwich Nutritional Therapist, Catherine Jeans

Ahead of her FREE talk on Weaning without sugar at the Norfolk Bump, Baby and Toddler Show this Sunday 10th, our Family Nutrition Expert Catherine Jeans shares her top tips for weaning your baby.

Weaning is such an exciting time, but, for some parents, it can also be a stressful time.  As a busy mum of two, Catherine knows that things don’t always go to plan… so here’s her expert advice on how to help make the transition from milk to food go a little bit smoother.

What is weaning all about?

Imagine tasting food for the first time in your life, discovering all those new tastes and textures!  It sounds amazing but, very often, you end up with a plate of pureed carrots up your dining room wall or every last morsel uneaten, and on the floor!  Remember weaning is about your child learning to taste, chew and swallow different foods… and it can take time before they actually start to eat much.

These 4 tips might just help to make the move to solid food a little less messy:


1. Take it slow with weaning
 The first few weeks are about experimentation with flavour and texture.  When starting out, introduce a new food every three days so you can pinpoint a food if your baby has a reaction or tummy upset.  If your baby does have a reaction, don’t give up on the food, just revisit at a later date.

2. Always start weaning at breakfast or lunchtime, never teatime  This is a new experience to your baby’s digestive system, better for the body to work with it during the day than in the middle of the night!

3. Start with vegetables rather than fruit…  this is one of the most important weaning tips, as it helps to prevent your baby developing a love for all things sweet.  Sweet potato and squash are ideal vegetables to start with.

4. Your baby needs healthy fats so include some oily fish, coconut oil, avocado and seed oils once they have been on solids for at least a month or two.

And try to enjoy it…. just think how amazing it must be for baby, experiencing all those tastes and textures for the first time!
