Alexander Technique: Back Pain Relief and So Much More

The Alexander Technique is provided in Norfolk at The Orange Grove Clinic by Janet West.  This technique is much more than just a way of relieving back pain and postural issues.  In fact, everyone can benefit from learning the Alexander Technique.  It is not a therapy, nor is it a treatment or set of physical exercises, but rather it is a re-education of mind and body – a technique for change.  It teaches us to release unnecessary and harmful habits of tension and recover the natural poise, grace and ease of movement we once had as very young children.

By learning to use yourself with poised natural body alignment you can become more energized and improve how you move, perform, look and feel.  Since its development by F.M. Alexander over 100 years ago, the Alexander Technique has helped millions of people worldwide to naturally overcome many difficulties, including:

  • muscle tension and stiffness
  • back, neck and joint pain
  • poor posture
  • breathing and vocal problems
  • anxiety and stress-related conditions

The Alexander Technique can also help to:

  • improve performance and prevent injury in music, drama and sport
  • enhance business and presentation skills
  • develop ease and elegance in movement
  • support pregnancy and childbirth

Research about Alexander Technique

In a major clinical trial, funded by the Medical Research Council and the NHS R&D Fund, Alexander Technique lessons were shown to provide long term benefit for back pain sufferers (BMJ 19 Aug 2008).

Alexander Technique for Maintaining Great Health

You don’t need to wait for a problem for Alexander Technique to be effective for you. Its founder, F.M. Alexander, called his method “a technique for living“ and people from all walks of life have found that learning to develop conscious use of oneself can be a powerful tool for self-development.  In the fast-paced, goal-oriented society we live in, the Alexander Technique offers a refreshing and practical approach to taking care of ourselves – it is a technique for life.

What do Alexander Technique Lessons Involve

During a course of lessons, your teacher will guide you with carefully selected words and skilful use of the hands.  Using simple, everyday movements such as sitting, standing, walking and bending, you will focus on how you carry out an activity, rather than on the end result.  By learning to prevent harmful habits, you begin to experience carrying out simple activities with a lighter, more fluid and free use of yourself – mind and body working more efficiently and in harmony.  In time, you will be able to use your new skill and understanding in more complex and demanding activities, bringing awareness and poise to anything you do.

Lessons are one-to-one with Janet.  Prices are £40.00 for an inital lesson, which lasts for an hour, and £35 for all subsequent lessons which last for 45 minutes.

A period of lying down in the classic Alexander Technique semi-supine position is usually part of a lesson.  You will be asked to remove your shoes, but no special clothing is required – just something which allows you to move freely.
